Office 365 is rebranding: what it means for your billing automation

Microsoft recently announced that they will be renaming some of its existing subscription products to fit them into the new Microsoft 365 scheme. Originally, the Microsoft 365 name referred to a bundle of subscriptions, including Windows 10 Enterprise and Office 365.

Going forward, the brand name will refer to a wider range of products and tools, in what Microsoft dubs the world's productivity cloud. Bringing the various Office 365 products under the same umbrella is the next step in this process. Officials also claimed the name change will help simplify things.

The new product names will go into effect on the 21st of April. These are the products that will change:

  • Office 365 Business Essentials will become Microsoft 365 Business Basic
  • Office 365 Business Premium will become Microsoft 365 Business Standard
  • Microsoft 365 Business will become Microsoft 365 Business Premium
  • Office 365 Business and Office 365 ProPlus will both become Microsoft 365 Apps. Microsoft will use the "for business" and "for enterprise" labels to distinguish between the two.

For the moment, it's a change in name alone, so you don't need to take any action. There will be no changes in pricing or features. And most importantly, no changes will be made to the way we count your customer's seats and active licenses!

We will automatically change the brand names on the 21st of April in our system, so your dashboard will list the correct names for each product.

If you are invoicing through Autotask, we recommend you consider changing the names of your Contract Services. These are the names that are displayed on your customer invoice. Unfortunately, it's a bit tricky for us to change them for you as everybody prefers to name these services differently.
